What does the Bible say about reincarnation?
This is a common theme throughout the bible, best summarized by:
Hebrews 9:27 People die once, and after that they are judged.
So people don’t reincarnate. We’ve got this one life as a chance to prove whether we’ll walk with God or prefer to follow our own desires.
However
In Luke 8, Matthew 8 and Mark 5, we read the story of a man (or two) possessed with a legion of demons. We’d describe him as a lunatic. He hadn’t worn clothes for years and he lived around tombs, threatening all who passed that way. He even broke chains used to bind him. When the demons saw Jesus, they asked if he’d come to punish them before their appointed time. They asked to be allowed to enter the herd of pigs nearby, who ran down the cliff and died.
Luke 11:24 “When an evil spirit comes out of a person, it goes through dry places looking for a place to rest. But it doesn’t find any. Then it says, ‘I’ll go back to the home I left.’ 25 When it comes, it finds the house swept clean and in order. 26 Then the spirit goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself. They enter and take up permanent residence there. In the end the condition of that person is worse than it was before.”
In these examples, we see that demons can indwell humans and animals, and move from one host to another.
I subscribe to the theory that demons are the spirits of Genesis 6’s Nephilim – the offspring of fallen angels and humans. These polluted the human race with such evil necessitating Noah’s flood.
Demons are immortal spirits like us, but have no place designated for them before the judgement at the end of time. They roam the earth, seeking a new host. People such as Nero and Hitler are described as demon-possessed, seeming as normal people, but mad on the destruction of others in one form or another.
I understand reincarnation as a spirit passing from one body to another, particularly after death. This is consistent with my understanding of demons. It explains the memories of past lives.
Conclusion: Reincarnation is demonic
I was surprised to learn recently that demon possession is recognized by the psychological profession in rare cases. I think sometimes other diagnoses are preferred by those who deny the spiritual. Conditions such as schizophrenia have been evidenced with physical measurements, which can be treated by restoring chemical balance. When praying for healing, I find our culture’s lack of understanding of demons tends to instigate fear when such is suggested, so I prefer to just speak against the named condition. As there is no magic formula, I think it appropriate to just command healing from schizophrenia, for example, without determining its cause as chemical or spiritual. However it is important to replace the void with Jesus, as demonstrated in Luke 11 above. Jesus would often heal people and command them to “Sin no more” – such that they would return to a worse condition.
As with anything, Satan delights in twisting reality into lies. He is the great deceiver and will seek any opportunity to distract people away from God’s truth. He calls good “evil” and evil “good”.
Reincarnation is not good – it is demonic.
