Christmas for dummies
The Christmas tree

During the Middle Ages, in northern Germany, churches presented a drama about the reason for Christmas.  Remember “Joy to the world … far as the curse is found”.  This song recalls our fall in the garden of Eden.  For this play, they decorated the church like the garden of Eden with the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the middle.  Regular fruit trees don’t have leaves in winter, so they decorated a pine tree with apples.  “Eve” took one of these apples and also gave one to her husband to eat.  After the service, they handed out the apples to everyone.
Centuries later, Queen Victoria saw a decorated Christmas tree, and wanted to have one.  This began the English tradition of Christmas trees.
